For dinner we all decided to go along with a tradition of my brother’s they started last year. They order Chinese food for dinner on Christmas Eve. While Michael and Phillip went to pick it up, we let Jacob and Kayla play outside for a little bit (because they really wanted to) in the dark cold backyard, which they totally didn’t mind at all! We ate dinner and talked and then had cake and ice cream, since we celebrate Christ’s birth at Christmas time. Kayla had been asking me all month long if we could make a cake for Jesus’ birthday, because we had read a story about a family doing that from the Dec. Friend, on pg. 16. Kayla, Grandma Carol and I made the cake together earlier that day. A white cake, because you can’t have Devil’s Food cake!
We were a little rushed, since bedtime was approaching. Dave had Kayla and Jacob sit on his lap and showed them where Santa was at on the internet from the Santa Tracker at NORAD. http://www.noradsanta.org/ While everyone else was visiting or doing other things, I read the Night Before Christmas to Kayla and Jacob while they were finishing their cake and ice cream.
We all weren’t really sure what we were going to do for the story of Christ’s birth. A nativity play? A narration with songs? Just read Luke 2? But because of time, we ended up just reading a children’s book, “This is the Stable” by Cynthia Cotton that I had just gotten from a school book order. We used our Playmobil nativity set and when I read a character, Kayla and Jacob got to take turns placing that piece in the nativity scene. With their ages I think this did end up working out best. It was short, simple, and sweet.
Dave and I “tried out” a new tradition this year of opening a present of pajamas. That was fun! We might try that one again next year.
Bedtime came, and we thought Kayla and Jacob would be okay sleeping in Kayla’s room together. But, it turned out they were so excited for Santa to come, (of course!) and wanted to see him so they kept pulling back the curtains to catch a glimpse. They were wound up and so hyper! Must have been the cake..oops. After several trips upstairs and threats and pleading, Grandma Carol went up to tell them stories and calm them. But even then, we finally had to separate them so they could get to sleep!
Downstairs we did some Christmas quizzes and played “Guesstures” (a game my brother Phillip brought that’s kinda like charades). It was really fun to play!!! And hilarious to watch!
We had hot chocolate with a scoop of ice cream and had our cake. Good times.
